The county currently hosts a population of around 120,000 with 115,930 of them living in the city limits of the city. It is conveniently located adjacent to Interstate 20. The city was established in March, 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was finally done.

Though Abilene is not quite as big as several other cities situated within the state of Texas, it still provides an ample amount of lodging, dining, cultural, and shopping opportunities. Abilene is quickly becoming known as a regional center for distribution, commerce, education, industry, and transportation.

Abilene, over the years has shifted the economy from a cattle-shipping prairie town to a bustling metropolis, full of oil, agriculture, and military. The extent of economic diversity that Abilene provides draws numerous determined people. Abilene solicits new industries by providing tax incentives and numerous opportunities.

The city of Abilene was the very first city within the state of Texas to fight the 1980s oil bust by creating a half-cent sales tax to help fund economic development during 1986.

There are some attractions to be found in the city. For people who are athletically inclined, there is the Abilene Speedway, Abilene Skate Park, Mesquite Hill Motocross Park, Abilene Dragstrip, and the Ball Ranch. The city of Abilene also offers numerous unique attractions, such as The Grace Museum, the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, The Center for Contemporary Arts, 12 Armored Division Memorial Museum, Prime Time family Entertainment Center, Paramount Theatre, Cockerell Galleries and Studios, Abilene Ballet Theatre, Abilene Community Bank, Abilene Community Theatre, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Abilene Opera Association, the Amy Graves Ryan Little Theatre and the Chorus Abilene.

A few of the other attractions within the city of Abilene are the Dyess Visitor Center Memorial Park, the Abilene Zoo, the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, and Abilene State Park. In the city there are over 25 parks that take up a total of approximately 1,246 acres.

The Abilene Zoo is home to a vast variety of animals. There are quite a few hundred animals situated in the facility. During the year, the Zoo offers some educational programs and summer courses. They even have several special events which take place from time to time. A few of the newer attractions consist of a cougar exhibit, a Black Rhino exhibit and a Southern American maned Wolf Exhibit. The Elm Creek backyard area will house numerous animals such as armadillos, skunks, and river otters that have been found locally.
