Lubbock is a name which came from the former Texas Ranger and Civil War Confederate, Thomas S. Lubbock. Throughout this particular time Francis R. Lubbock, his brother, served as the governor of Texas.

Lubbock County was formed in 1876, even if the existing city was not founded until 1890. The first settlement was formed from the amalgamation of Monterey and Old Lubbock. In the year 1891 Lubbock City was referred to as the county seat and the city of Lubbock was incorporated on the 16th of March, 1909.

The rail service was established shortly after Lubbock was incorporated. Agriculture grew along with the expansion of the railroads. The area shortly became the county's marketing center. As such they were called the "Hub of the Plains."

Since several more opportunities were presented to the city of Lubbock it continued to grow. An important boost to the cities economy came from the opening of Texas Technological College during 1925. The effects of the Great Depression were countered by the development of a couple of military training bases throughout WWII. The cities population expanded rapidly once the war ended. During the '40's, the growth rate was second only to Albuquerque throughout the whole nation.

On May 11,1970, the city experienced its worst disaster in the form of a tornado. This led to 26 fatalities and has been considered amongst the strongest tornadoes in history. It led to over $135 million in damages across over three square miles of Lubbock City. Together with the repairs done on the buildings which were damaged, the Lubbock memorial Civic Center was created as a memorial to people who were victims of this devastating natural disaster.

Lubbock's economy is still based mostly on agriculture, with supplemental income that comes from a variety of manufactured facilities. The economy of Lubbock has continued to become diversified within particular fields, which include retail trade, government, health care and eduction.
