The name of the city came from a small town in Santander, situated on the north shore of Spain. Spaniard Jose de Escandon established one of the last northern provinces of New Spain, Nuevo Santander. The goal was to colonize the country Mexico. The city of Laredo was colonized during the year 1755 and was first named San Agustin de Laredo. Together with the city of Laredo, six other settlements were founded along the Rio Grande by Escandon, including Reynosa and Carmargo during the year 1749, Revilla and Dolores in 1750, and Mier in the year 1752. Laredo is thought to be the oldest independent settlement within Texas since there were no missions connected with its founding. It is now the only remaining Spanish colonial settlement on the north bank of the lower Rio Grande.

Captain Tomas Sanchez settled 15 leagues of land on the Rio Grande, along with three other families on the 15th of May, the year 1755. The family raised sheep, cattle, horses, goats, mules and oxen. The city of Laredo was laid out by the year 1767 with the economy mainly focused on ranching.

Laredo is likewise the largest inland port within the United States because of its strategic location, the North American Free Trade Agreement, dozens of import export agencies and several twin assembly plants.
