The name of Carrollton, is thought to have come from Carrollton, Illinois, which was the birthplace of the cities earliest settlers. Carrollton, Texas was initially settled in 1840 and was officially incorporated by 1913. In the beginning it was exclusively an agricultural community, but when the railway lines ran through Carrollton City in the year 1888 it became a shipping center for grain, livestock, gravel, cotton and cottonseed. Carrollton City grew significantly at the end of the second World War and was later enhanced by the surplus of individuals arriving from North Dallas.
The city of Carrollton attracts a wide variety of different companies because of it's central location and business cost advantages. More than 5,000 businesses are situated within Carrollton City with the majority of them being involved with manufacturing, construction and wholesale trades, real estate, finance or insurance.
The amount of developed park land is presently over 1,230 acres, making it amongst the highest park land per capita within the area. Carrollton City provides some amenities to its residents, like two recreation centers, two swimming facilities, homestead museum, a senior center, tennis center, and an amphitheater. There are several playing fields, playgrounds, hiking and biking trails, and picnic areas scattered throughout the city. Carrollton City boasts two of the top municipal golf courses in the state.
The city's economy is kept somewhat stable with a largely diversified economic base. In the workforce, there are now more than 71,000 individuals. The city of Carrollton is home to many small business enterprises, that creates an entrepreneurial community.
Within the city; there are some world class museums and art galleries, a theater, an opera, a ballet and a symphony. 60 acres are devoted completely to the Dallas Arts District, making it the largest downtown arts district within the United States.
More than fifty different lakes and about 100 public and private golf courses sit in a 100-mile radius of Carrollton City.
There are various unique boutiques in Carrollton City which sell an eclectic assortment of gifts. Moreover, there are more than twenty five major shopping malls and thirty antique districts located in Carrollton City. There are even various nearby malls, such as The Shops at Willow Bend, the Stonebriar Mall and the Dallas Galleria. Additionally, the 1.9 million square foot Grapevine Mills Outlet mall is located nearby.
