During 2000, the population was just 86,911. By the year 2009, it was 119,510 and in 2010 the population had reached 127,921. The city of Killeen is one of the principle cities of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area which Killeen City now occupies was originally a small farming community by the name of Palo Alto, that had existed since 1872. During 1881, the Gulf, Santa Fe and Colorado Railway acquired 360 acres of land, including the land where Palo Alto was located. They created a 70-block town on the land. The town was named after the assistant general manager of railroad, Frank P. Killeen. Killeen prospered, and by the following year a railroad depot, saloon, a school and several stores had been developed. Some inhabitants from nearby communities relocated to the city and by 1884 the population had risen to about 350 individuals. By this time, Killeen had five general stores, two gristmills, two cotton gins, two saloons, a blacksmith shop a hotel and a lumberyard.

Fort Hood is located right near Killeen City. As a result, the economy within Killeen is heavily dependent on the soldiers stationed at the Fort. Fort Hood is the area's largest source of job.
